Abstract
The association with significant others has been emphasized as a major factor of delinquency in criminological theories, and also supported by empirical research. In addition, developmental criminology research provided evidence for the multiple developmental trajectories of delinquency, instead of single trajectory, and the influence of attachment to others on those trajectories. Prior research mainly focused on the changes in delinquency over time while developmental changes of the relationships with significant others received less attention. The purpose of the current study is to examine changes in delinquency as well as attachment to others from 6th grade to 10th grade, and explore the relationships among them. According to the results of growth mixture model, there appeared three development trajectories of delinquency(i.e. no/low-persistent group, high-decrease group, low-increase group). The results of repeated measure ANOVA showed significant differences in changes in abuse at home, deviant peer association, and attachment to teachers across subgroups, time, and the interactions of them, significant differences in changes in attachment to parents across subgroups and time, and significant differences in changes in association with classmates across subgroups. In addition, changes in abuse at home, association with classmates, and attachment to teachers were more related to the changes in delinquency of high-decrease group, changes in attachment to parents were more associated with the changes in delinquency of low-increase group, but changes in deviant peer association were connected to the changes in delinquency of all the groups. Policy implications have been provided.
