초록

This paper attempts to adopt a different approach to the environmental crisis in education. It tries to recognise the range of our politics and ethics as part of that environment, ultimately placing these in terms of questions of metaphysics, in a manner that is realised in comparable, yet strikingly different ways in the paintings of Anselm Kiefer and in the writings of Thoreau. Hence, it avoids taking the environment or sustainability as a topic for education, in the belief that to do this is to compartmentalise the problem and to hide those broader ways in which we need to find a new economy of living. It is shown that prevailing educational practice militates against this in various ways. With reference to the contrast between the tree and the rhizome as images of the structuring of thought, it specifies positive, more pervasive measures that can be taken towards a better economy of education.
