플라톤의 이데아론에 함의된 ‘초월성’의 교육학적 시사점: 칸트의 ‘선험적 이념’을 중심으로

본 논문의 목적은 칸트의 ‘선험적 이념’에 비추어 플라톤의 이데아론에 들어있는 ‘초월성’의 성격을 규명하는 것에 있다. 플라톤의 이데아는 감각경험을 초월한 순수사고를 통하여 파악되는 인식대상이라는 점에서 ‘초월성’을 띤다. 칸트의 ‘선험적 이념’은 감각경험을 초월한 이성의 개념으로서, 상이한 지식들 간의 체계적 일관성을 요구하는 ‘조건들의 총체성’의 이념이다. ‘선험적 이념’은 ‘직관’과 ‘지성’의 결합물로서의 지식이 우연적 집합체가 아닌 ‘조건들의 총체’를 이루도록 하기 위하여 조건들에 관한 지속적인 탐구를 가능케 하는 ‘규제적 원리’로 활용된다. 이 의미의 선험적 이념은 감각경험을 초월한 것이면서도 탐구의 원리로서 지식의 획득에 반드시 필요한 필수적 조건이라고 말할 수 있다. 선험적 이념의 초월성에 비추어 보면, 플라톤의 이데아도 이 의미의 규제적 원리로 해석될 수 있다. 대화편「유티프론」에 나타나듯이 ‘경신의 이데아’는 경신에 부합하는 행위나 사건 등을 참된 의미의 ‘경신’으로 만들어 주는 조건들을 지속적으로 탐구하도록 하는 ‘규제적 원리’로 작용한다. 플라톤의 이데아는 초감각성을 띠지만, 이것은 경험과 무관한 추상적이고 허구적인 관념이 아니라, 탐구를 지속시키는 인식주체 안의 ‘규제적 원리’로 해석될 수 있다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the "transcendental" implied in Plato's theory of Ideas. Idea, in the Platonic sense, is on the one hand, the supreme knowledge acquired through the process of education for "Philosopher-King". On the other hand, it has "the Transcendental" in it, which is grasped not by sensory experience but by pure thought. "The transcendental Idea" in the Kantian sense, is the concept of "reason" as the knowing faculty which goes beyond the limits of sensory experience. "The transcendental Idea" has the regulative rule which urges us to complete "the totality of conditions" by proceeding from one condition to another. It is necessary as the principle of enquiry for conceiving the Idea of "the Unconditiond" as the "totolity of of conditions". In the light of "transcendental" implied in the "Transcendental Ideas", Platonic sense of Idea is to be interpreted as having the regulative use. In one of Plato's dialogues, "Eutyphro", "Idea of holiness" is used as the regulative principle which makes us inquire "the condition" of individual act or event. The character of Platonic Idea transcending the sense world, is not the abstract or fictional concept but regulative principle in the knowing subject.
