학교교육의 본질에 대한 두 시선: 주희(朱熹)와 듀이(J. Dewey)의 학교론

이 글에서는 주희와 듀이의 학교론을 중심으로 학교교육의 본질에 대한 대표적인 두 가지 관점을 비교 검토하면서, 현대 우리 사회의 학교교육의 진단과 변화에 필요한 철학적 지혜를 모색해 보고자 했다. 특히 주희와 듀이의 학교교육철학에 주목한 것은 양자가 동서고금의 교육지성사에서 학교교육에 관한 가장 특징적이고 체계적이면서도 현실파급력도 갖춘 사유의 힘을 보여주었다는 점이 고려되었다. 이 글에서는 특히 주희의 학교론은 ‘본성 실현의 학교 모델’로, 듀이의 학교론은 ‘사회생활 구현의 학교 모델’로 규정하고 그 각각의 성격을 정리함과 동시에 비교적 관점에서 양자의 공유점과 차이점, 상호비판점을 검토해 보았다. 그 결과 양자는 학교교육의 본질에 대한 이해에 있어 그 이질성의 이면에 상당한 수준의 동질성도 지닌다는 점이 포착되었다. 양자의 학교론은 각각 쉽게 논박될 수 없는 설득력을 보여주었으며, 따라서 양자의 특장점이 살아나는 방식의 현재적 의미 도출이 필요하다는 점이 포착되었다. 학교교육의 본질에 대한 주희와 듀이의 철학적 사유 모델은 우리로 하여금 한국의 학교교육의 본질과 이상을 따져 갈 때 간과할 수 없는 주요 논점들이 무엇인가를 각인케 한다. 학교교육에 관한 의미있는 변화가 요구되는 현시점에서, 주희와 듀이가 그러했듯, 본질에 충실하면서도 철저히 현실에 닻을 내리는 실학적이고 프래그마티즘적인 학교교육철학의 성과를 축적하고 공유해갈 필요가 있다.
Abstract
This article aims to examine comparatively the two main viewpoints for the nature and ideal of school education, focusing on Zhu Xi's and John Dewey's philosophy of school education. Zhu Xi and John Dewey showed their own powers of thinking for school education which are the most distinguished, well-organized, and practical in the history of East and West, Past and Present; that is why this article focused on the both's philosophy of school education. Finally, this article explained Zhu Xi's philosophical viewpoint of school education as "a school model of the realization of human nature", whereas John Dewey's as "a school model of the carrying of social life." A kind of dialectical and synthetic approach around the two models is needed for more advanced and balanced understanding for the ideal of school education, in that all the two proved their persuasive powers in spite of the differences in both. Through Zhu Xi's and John Dewey's philosophical thinking models for school education, we can grasp the important arguing points in searching for the ideal of school education in future society.
