아렌트(H. Arendt)의 ‘탄생성(natality)’ 개념과 교육적 사유의 실제를 위한 제안: The Freedom Writers Diary의 교육실천 분석

한나 아렌트는 전체주의 체제를 면밀히 분석하고 인간과 인간적 삶을 위한 근본 조건을 제시하면서 ‘공적영역(the public realm)’에서의 ‘말(word)’과 ‘행위(action)’의 중요성을 역설한다. 이러한 아렌트의 주장에는 그녀 사상을 관통하고 있는 핵심 개념인 ‘탄생성(natality)’이 놓여있다. “인간이 태어났다”는 사실 그 자체의 의미를 지닌‘탄생성’은 이 세계에 새롭게 온 누군가가 자신의 말과 행위로서 세계를 경신한다는 점에서 인간이 ‘새로운 시작’ 이며, ‘창조적 가능성’의 존재라는 사실을 가능하게 하는 개념이다. 아렌트는 이 탄생성 개념을 교육의 본질로 제시하며 교육은 이 세계에 새롭게 유입된 존재들이 세계를 창조할 수 있도록 그들의 ‘새로움’을 보호하고 그들을책임지는 일 곧 그들을 얼마나 사랑할지를 결정하는 지점에 놓여있다고 역설한다. 그리고 이러한 아렌트의 교육에 관한 성찰은 기존의 계획적이고 의도적이며, 예측가능하고 통제가능한 범주 속에서 다루어져 온 교육 패러다임을 반추하게 한다. 다만 아렌트의 교육적 사유가 교육현장에서 어떠한 형태로 수용될 수 있을지에 대해서는 지속적으로 관심을 기울여야 할 부분이다. 이에 본고는 아렌트의 ‘탄생성’ 개념과 교육적 사유를 근거로 실화를 바탕으로 출판․제작된 교육 시나리오 The Freedom Writers Diary에 제시된 실례들을 통해 아렌트의 교육에 대한 입장을 구체화하고 그 실천을 위한 아이디어를 제안하는데 목적을 두고 있다. 본 연구를 통해서 교육은 우리가 지금껏 살아왔고, 살고 있으며, 살아가게 될 불확실하며 예측불가능한 이 공동의 세계 속에서 인간이 개별적인 복수의 존재들과 관계하며, 세계에 대한 인식을 통해 책임있는 행위를 하도록 힘쓰는 일과 상관한다는 사실을확인하게 된다. 교육은 이 세계의 지속적인 경신을 위해서 한 인간의 ‘새로움 그 자체’ 그리고 ‘창조적 시작’을 보호하고 이에 ‘책임을 다하는 움직임’이 되어야 할 것이다.
Abstract
Natality is one of the core concepts of Hannah Arendt’s philosophy. She argues that a human becomes a ‘new beginning’ and a being of ‘creative potential’ from the moment of his/her birth because in a good or bad way he/she constantly renews the world with his/her words and actions. According to Arendt, therefore, individual human being’s word and action in the public realm are important elements to compose his/her humanity and human life. Based upon this concept of natality, Arendt thinks that the primary role of education is to protect and foster the children’s ‘newness’ in order to make them capable of renewing the public realm, i.e. the world. This idea of Arendt is an epochal approach to education and to its fundamental goal. Then, how can we apply this pedagogical concept proposed by Arendt to the practical field in education? This essay aims to answer this question by clarifying Arendt’s practical ideas in education through The Freedom Writers Diary which was based on non-fiction episodes and real-life experiences in the field of education. In so doing, this study ascertains that Arendt put the concept of natality in the center of her pedagogical thought and that she believed that education should be the activity to protect and promote a human being’s ‘newness’ and creative instinct for constant renewal of the world.
