Abstract

This study examines the meaning and value of "reading" as a human activity from a pedagogical perspective. Today, we are entering an era in which writing is distributed like a commodity, reading is regarded as consumption or labor, artificial intelligence(AI) can read texts for us, and we may need to communicate in a newly designed language called an AI language in the near future. Presently, when the paradigm of knowledge and language itself is transforming, can reading still be regarded as a valuable human activity? What are the spiritual values that can be realized by reading? By delving into this issue, investigating the convention of reading can be a very appropriate starting point. This makes it possible to provide a new perspective on reading, which has remained in a personal context only, as an act with an institutional meaning. For this purpose, this study examines the origins and development process of Lectio Divina, passed down as an important spiritual practice in the monastic tradition from the West’s ancient times to the Middle Ages, and its ontological structure. The Lectio Divina practice, which aims at the state of unity with God through scriptural reading demonstrates that reading is an act that conforms to human nature and the way of being, and a qualitative change occurs through it in the human being. Therefore, reading can be defined as an act of delivering the human mind using concepts and linguistic symbols given only to humans as media of expression and establishing the human mind through this transmission. From this perspective, textbook reading, as a study method in today’s school, has the task of restoring contemplation and ultimately human nature.
