Abstract

The Purpose of this study is to examine the characteristics of North Korean engineering college’s curriculum and contents and directions of educational reform in North Korean higher education. The educational goals, allocation of school hours, and curriculum of Information Communication Department and Information Engineering Department in Kim Chaek University of Technology, Pyongyang Computer College and Guseoung Technical College have been reviewed. And the curriculum of Computer Engineering Department in Kim Chaek University of Technology was compared and analyzed with that of Seoul National University. Established in the form of college except Kim Chaek University of Technology, science and engineering universities in North Korea are founded to provide hands-on experiences, which lead to produce experts in the field. Educational reforms like shortening of educational period, integration of departments, establishment of new departments and lectures in the field of high technology, and introduction of credit system and elective system are currently taking place in North Korean higher education. Nevertheless, more fundamental reforms such as weakening of political education, integration of departments and merger between colleges, flexibility of curriculum management, and empowerment of students are required in order to provide training people with high-tech skills with comprehensive problem-solving abilities.
