초록
This paper focuses on the educative role of language - first through speaking and listening and later through reading and writing. While granting the great importance of language-learning and the acquisition of literacy, the paper seeks to draw attention also to their limitations in children’s learning and living. This attention leads then to the formulation of a perspective on childhood that is quite different from, and potentially at odds with, recent emphases on literacy as a primary aim of education and a key indicator of a school-system’s effectiveness.
Abstract
This paper focuses on the educative role of language - first through speaking and listening and later through reading and writing. While granting the great importance of language-learning and the acquisition of literacy, the paper seeks to draw attention also to their limitations in children’s learning and living. This attention leads then to the formulation of a perspective on childhood that is quite different from, and potentially at odds with, recent emphases on literacy as a primary aim of education and a key indicator of a school-system’s effectiveness.
