초록

이 논문은 어린이라는 존재의 의미와 교육적 성장의 조건을 철학적으로 탐구함으로써 초등교육의 개념과 목적에 대해 재성찰하려는 시도이다. 이는 초등학교에서 시험평가 중심의 경쟁적 교육열과 수단적 가치 추구 경향 및 관료주의적 통제문화로 인해, 어린이와 교사의 삶이 갈수록 위협받고 있다는 문제의식에서 비롯되었다. 먼저 아동기와 초등교육에 관한 기존의 학문적 접근의 다양한 양상과 한계를 살펴보고, 근대성을 비판하는 현대 교육철학적 사유에 근거한 탐색이 필요함을 밝힌다. 이어서 부버(M. Buber), 듀이(J. Dewey), 위니캇(D. Winnicott), 던(J. Dunne)의 관련 사상에 근거하여 어린이 시기에 풍부하고 교육적 배려를 통해 발달시켜야 할 특성에 대해 탐구한다. 그 결과로 의뢰심과 관계능력, 신체활동과 유연한 적응력, 놀이와 유희충동, 경이감과 모험심을 ‘어린이다움’을 구성하는 네 가지로 구분 짓고, 각각의 의미에서 근대 이원론적 경계 넘기 가능성과 교육적 시사를 밝힌다. 이를 토대로 초등교육 단계에서는 공동 활동을 통해 일깨워지는 자아의식, 몸의 주의력과 신체화된 판단력, 미적인 지각과 표현의 즐거움, 낭만적 상상과 호기심어린 흥미를 발달시키는 과업이 우선시되어야함을 제안한다.

Abstract

This paper is an attempt to re-imagine the nature and aims of primary education based upon the philosophical reflections on childhood and childlikeness by post-modern contemporary thinkers such as Buber, Dewey, Winnicott, and Dunne. It appears to be distinctively pregnant in their thoughts that genuinely educative growth for human being is not just one-directional so as to require us to prepare for growing-down into childlikeness while growing-up into adulthood. The major analyses in this paper would address the following three questions, which are to be approached both descriptively and critically. First, as a preliminary issue, what is the differential contribution of philosophical inquiry in relation to the existing psychological, sociological, and historical studies on children and childhood? Secondly, what are the characteristic traits that comprise post-modern thinkers’ conception of childlikeness as both the essential-ideal traits of childhood and as the idealized educative value for continuous human growing? Thirdly, what critical and constructive suggestions are to be derived from philosophical understanding of childhood as for the aims and challenging tasks of primary education today? In dealing with these questions, it is clarified further what it is to philosophize childhood for getting otherwise irreplaceable critical wisdom.
