본 논문은 우리 사회가 지향해야 할 다원적 민주주의 사회에서 함양되어야 할 시민성을 비판적 능력이나 공동체적 연대에서 찾기보다는, 이것의 함양을 방해하는 아이들의 정서적 도덕적 곤란의 원천으로서 지나친 경쟁문화의 결과로 초래된 우월감과 열등감 같은 부정적이고 왜곡된 자기 관계의 회복에서 찾아야 한다고 주장한다. 그리고 이것의 회복을 위해 이러한 부정적 감정 뒤에 있는 ‘타자 인정에의 욕구’의 교육적 지위를 평가하는 데 본 연구의 목적이 있다. 이 평가를 위해 먼저 타자 인정에의 욕구를 긍정하며 세 가지 자기 관계 인정을 말하는 호네트(Axel Honneth)의 인정 윤리를 살펴보며, 오늘날 우리 사회의 민주 시민 교육에서 특별히 중요할 수 있는 ‘자기 존중’과 ‘자부심’의 관계에 대해 분석한다. 둘째, 타자 인정에의 욕구의 위험성을 말하는 루소의 교육론을 재해석하는 노이하우즈(Frederic Neuhouser)의 논의를 재구성하며, 그 위험성에도 불구하고 이것이 교육적으로 순기능을 할 수 있는 방법을 모색한다. 본 논문에서 보이고자 하는 것은 다음 두 가지이다. 첫째, 자부심과 자기 존중은 개념적으로 구분되며 후자는 근대적 자아의 고유한 특성으로서 민주 시민 교육을 위해 교육적으로 성취되어야 할 것이다. 둘째, 자부심은 그 자체로 나쁜 것은 아니며 오히려 인간 행복의 중요한 구성 요소로서 교육적으로 보호될 필요가 있지만, 우리 사회와 같은 과열 경쟁 사회에서는 위험한 자기 관계의 양태로 빠지기 쉽기 때문에 교육적으로 특별한 주목이 긴급히 요청된다.
Abstract
This paper is to aim to claim that one of the urgent things for educators to do to cultivate democratic citizenship among the Korean youth now is to try to recover their sound self-relations. Having suffered too long from high competition, the Korean youth are saturated with their sense of superiority or inferiority as the source of their emotional and moral troubles. To make this claim soundly grounded, I attempt to clarify the educational status of one’s desire to be recognized or highly regarded by others, which lies behind all those negative self-relations in today’s youngsters. This paper consists of two parts. First, it examines Axel Honnet’s theory of recognition ethics that defends the educational values of one’s desire to be recognized by others as an legitimate moral basis of our moral obligations to recognize others. His theory is educationally insightful in enumerating three distinctive self-relations that can be educationally or morally cultivated for mature self-relations: self-confidence, self-respect, and self-esteem. I emphasize here especially the importance of recognizing the conceptual difference between self-respect and self-esteem for democratic education in Korea since the confusion between them has caused many unjust school practices in Korea including discrimination against the students with poor academic scores. Secondly, I reconstruct Frederic Neuhauser’s reinterpretation of Rousseau’s concept of amour-propre, a desire to be highly regarded by others, which takes some ambivalent attitude toward one’s desire to be recognized by others. Neuhouser’s discussion here has a merit in showing how one’s desire to be recognized by others can be dangerous, yet, needs to be educationally guided by adults rather than dismissed in education since we (post-)moderns cannot help desiring it. His reformulations of Rousseau’s educational project is presented to show how this can happen as well as how self-respect and self-esteem can be cultivated in such a way as to be made compatible in one’s personhood. This means that the youth can be fostered as a good citizen by being led into mature self-relations, in which self-respect and self-esteem are intertwined in tension as well as in support to each other. This paper concludes that the cultivation of self-respect is urgent and critical to democratic citizenship in Korea now and that the development of self-esteem is not in itself dangerous but needs to take some caution with educational care to be made compatible with the cultivation of self-respect in the Korean youth, which is the very condition of a good democratic citizenship.
