이 연구는 주디스 버틀러의 애도론을 바탕으로 근대적 주체성에 근거하지 않는 대안적 페다고지의 가능성을 모색하는 데에 목표가 있다. 오늘날 교육이 길러내는 능력주의 주체는 자아와 미래에 대한 낙관을 지속하기 위해, 삶의 위태로움과 고통을 일깨우는 타자의 죽음에 애도로서 응답하지 못한다. 주디스 버틀러에 따르면, 타자의 죽음을 애도하는 주체는 자율적인 근대 주체와 달리 타자와의 배타적인 경계가 허물어지는 방식으로 출현하는 취약하고 타율적인 주체로 이들이 수행하는 애도는 연약한 타자들의 공거(cohabitation)를 모색하는 근거가 된다. 이를 바탕으로 대안적 페다고지가 제안된다. 애도의 페다고지는 (1)주체의 자율성이나 독립성이 아닌 취약성에 기반하고, (2)비판을 도구로 삼아 애도되지 못하는 삶을 발견하고 이들을 포괄하는 공동의 정치를 생성해나가며, (3)타자의 죽음에 대한 애도는 결코 완수될 수 없다는 실패의 윤리를 바탕으로 끊임없이 시도된다. 애도의 페다고지는 현대사회의 무너지고 소진된 주체를 회복하는 교육이고, 슬픔과 고통, 두려움 등 소외된 정동의 가치를 되살리는 교육이며, 궁극적으로는 ‘함께 살아가기’를 모색하는 민주주의적 교육의 한 가지 실천양상이다.
Abstract
This study aims to explore the possibility of an alternative pedagogy that does not depend on modern subjectivity. Subjects of meritocracy, who have grown up through education, aim to maintain self-confidence and meet expectations for the future. This makes them reluctant to respond to the death of others which reminds them of the precariousness and pain of life. According to Judith Butler, subjects who can mourn the death of others, unlike modern subjects, have no clear boundaries and are heteronomous. Mourning is the foundation of cohabitation with weak people. Inspired by Butler’s theory of mourning, this study proposes a pedagogy of mourning: a pedagogy that (1) is based on vulnerability rather than autonomy or independence of the subject; (2) uses criticism as a tool to discover ungrievable lives and creates a common politics that includes them; and (3) is constantly attempted based on the ethics of failure that mourning the death of others can never be completed. The pedagogy of mourning is an education practice that aims to restore the collapsed and exhausted lives of modern society and revive values of neglected affection such as sadness, pain, and fear. In addition, this is an aspect of democratic education that ultimately seeks to “live together.”
