Abstract
This study critically revisits the concept of teacher identity, which has dominated global teacher education discourse over the last few decades, to explore a new direction for future teacher education and reveal the inherently educational aspect of a teacher's job as a moral mission deeply engaged with the human growth of future generation. The latter tends to be ignored in the school-reform-oriented discourse in the presently dominant teacher education that centers on "what works" when identifying the qualifications of teachers. In so doing, this study draws upon the post-modern analysis of the concept of self-identity by Bernard Williams, a contemporary philosopher well-known as a deconstructive analytic philosopher, to show the significance of the moral virtue of "sincerity" behind the formation of self-identity and the virtue of self-acknowledgment as a form of teacher identity. This is directed to showing a weak sense of moral normativity in the concept of teacher identity, which requires us to reconceive teacher education, not in terms of teacher professionalism based on the qualification with functional competences, but in terms of the moral character that is key to forming the teacher identity.
