Abstract

This study aims to understand my experiences and events while living together as a transversal family by temporarily protecting and adopting two mixed dogs, using a post-humanism perspective. To this end, the researcher developed a narrative focused on animals throughout these ongoing processes. The analysis applied Deleuze's concept of “Becoming an Animal” and Haraway's concept of “trans-species sympoiesis” to interpret the uniqueness of these researcher's experience of “becoming”. The human-dog narratives of “becoming” and “co-occurrence” involve the researcher, her son, the mixed-breed dogs 'Chamgae' and 'Tonggae,' anonymous neighbors, and the Jindo dog, ‘Datbyeol’ "Living with a Mixed-Breed Dog" is organized around three themes: 1) The failure of a rescue dog foster arrangement, 2) Raising a puppy and confronting my personal limitations, and 3) Human-like (canine) speciesism and dog-hatred. The narratives of "Learning with a Mixed-Breed Dog" were structured around: contagious anxiety, embodied communication, and material-discursive relationship in which my true self is fully revealed. The unique aspects of the trans-species sympoiesis and contagion in the human-dog relationship specifically: 1) Forming a pack with other species by becoming a trans-species family that shares meals, 2) Creating trans-species sociality and social networks, and 3) The metaplasms and contagion within the pack formed by humans and dogs. Drawing on these narratives and analyses, this study interprets the qualitative researcher's experience of “becoming-mixed-breed-dog” as the ontological equality established between humans and dogs.
