Abstract

A rhetorical view of grammar is that understanding grammar is an important tool for the writer. With her rhetorical focus, Kolln is predisposed to favour a ‘top-down’, context oriented grammar. However, reference to Systematic Functional Grammar or Cognitive Grammar is notably absent from Kolln(1996) and Kolln & Gray(2010). In this article, it is argued that fundamental hypotheses of Cognitive Linguistics(or Cognitive Grammar) accord with the view of Rhetorical Grammar, and provide us with systematic frame in which the purpose of Rhetorical Grammar can be accomplished more adequately. Cognitive Linguistics can be properly used as a theoretical foundation for rhetorical grammar, expecting or explaining the effects of any chosen grammatical unit in writing process, for Cognitive Linguistics reveals that all constructions (from schematic syntactic constructions to substantive lexical items) are pairings of a syntactic and morphological form with a meaning. This paper discusses several situations where rhetorical choices can be made more systematically by turning to the insights from Cognitive Linguistics and its related approaches to language.
