Abstract
Modern society tends to focus on physicalist determinism based on science. Neural science, brain science, and artificial intelligence are expected to lead the fourth industrial revolution in the era ahead of the decision theory is more forceful. The trend toward reducing mental property to physical properties is being reinforced by political and social reasons. This is a kind of modern version of fate. The Indian culture that became the soil of Buddhism was also a culture that respects fate too much. In India, fate has been commandeered in terms of causality and karma. Being faithful to fate was faithful to his true self, Atman. In Buddhism, the way of dealing with destiny and free will in this Indian culture was different from the Brahman tradition. As to anything known to prescribe human life in advance, the Buddha encouraged him not to wonder or worry about it. The Buddhist character related to fate have become much weaker in China. Tsung mi(宗密) recognized the indeterministic viewpoint as the starting point of Buddhist practice. Beyond breaking the determinism, Chan oriented it toward Mind(心) that was not bound to be bound by any decision. This view is also confirmed through the meaning of the Never being clouded about cause and effect(不昧因果). Never stick to cause and effect, don’t treat an cause and effect as a determinism, this is implicit in this concept.
