Abstract
This study aimed to examine what kind of perception prospective teachers have about speaking based on their recall of speaking experiences. We examined speaking experiences of 60 prospective teachers who were in their first year at the College of Education at K University, and also conducted interviews with 6 prospective teachers. There were significant differences in the positive and negative experiences of prospective teachers regarding speaking by discourse type. This result means that prospective teachers have different positive and negative speaking experiences depending on the discourse type. The prospective teachers had both positive and negative experiences in formal speaking. In addition, the prospective teachers had burdens and difficulties regarding presentations, but they also gained confidence and experienced growth through the presentation experience. It should be examined in depth that the difference in the ratio of positive and negative experiences regarding ‘conversation’ among the prospective teachers’ experiences is greater than the difference in the ratio of other discourse types. Teacher training universities need to open and operate a separate ‘speaking’ course exclusively for prospective teachers. Teachers' colleges and colleges of education should establish speaking education courses for prospective teachers that focus on teacher speaking skills, and the curriculum should include mandatory content on conversation.
