이 연구는 오늘날 신세대 여성들의 시가와 친정과의 관계에 있어 양계화가 정착되어 가고 있는지에 대한 궁금증에서 시작되었다. 이를 알아보기 위해 결혼 기간 10년 이내의 소자녀가족 출신의 외동딸 14명을 대상으로 그들의 친족행동에 대한 사례조사를 실시했다. 대면 접촉빈도 및 기타 지원 교류와 밀접하게 연결되는 지리적 접근성을 주요하게 다루었으며, 경제적 지원의 내용과 자녀양육 지원에서의 특징을 분석해 보았다. 그 결과를 요약 정리하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 지리적 접근성에 있어 시가와 가까운 사례들이 친정과 가까운 사례보다 훨씬 많았으며, 따라서 대면 접촉빈도도 시가와 더 많았다. 둘째, 경제적 지원에 있어서는 시가에 정기적으로 제공하는 사례가 많으며, 친정에만 제공하는 사례는 한 경우도 없다. 셋째, 자녀양육의 도움은 거의 친정으로부터 제공 받는 것으로 나타났다. 넷째, 전반적으로 사례들의 부모자녀 관계는 견고함을 보여준다. 이 연구는 사례 여성들이 개인적 주체자로서 친족관계 설정에 있어 자신의 자원을 어느 정도 전략적으로 사용할 수 있는지를 보고자 했다. 그러나 신혼 초 거주지 마련부터 시가의 자원을 이용하는 현실에서 여성이 부계적 가족주의의 규범의 압력을 전략적으로 피해가기란 쉽지 않고 시가와의 관계 설정에서 개인적 주체자로서의 행동을 하기란 쉽지 않음을 보았다. 친족연구에서 규범보다 개인적 전략을 강조하는 시각은 한계가 있음을 말할 수 있다. 무엇보다도 신혼부부의 거처가 신랑 측과 신부 측의 동등한 자원이 개입될 때 비로소 양계화 과정은 시작될 것이며, 이보다 빠른 길은 국가가 신혼부부 본인들이 자력으로 감당할 저렴한 주택 공급 정책을 펼 때일 것이다.
Abstract
This study attempts to analyze the kinship behavior of young married women in urban Korea. A case study method using in-depth interview is used to elicit the data on differential characteristics of relations of fourteen newly married women toward their parents-in-law and their own parents. Geographical proximity, economic support and child-rearing support are treated with special attenrt and cevaerate the extent d cwhich bilateral trend i tretowarrogressed iandheir kinship behavior. Results are as follow. First, geographical proximity tends to be patrilineal due mainly to the fact that dwellings of the newly weds are generally supplied by the husband's parents. Second, the cases provide economic support more often to their parents-in-law. There is not one case in which one sends a certain amount of money regularly to her own parents without equally sending to her parents-in-law. It is only when one makes separate income for her to offer economic support to her own parents. The dimension of economic support among the cases clearly shows patrilineal familism. Third, the cases tend to depend more on the support of their own parents for child-rearing. Unilateral reliance on one set of parents in daily life help like child-rearing , however, should not be taken as an indication of the weakening of patrilineal ideology. This study shows that young women in recent urban Korea are still restricted in utilizing their strategic resources in reducing the patrilineal norm by balancing their supporting behavior toward both sets of parents. Patrilineal familism which is rooted in the patrilocal concept leads them to have more frequent contact with their parents-in-law from the beginning of their married life. It is the contention of this study that bilateral descent in the real meaning of word will progress in Korea only when the economic burden of the dwelling of the newly weds is equally divided between the bride and the bridegroom. The fastest way for it is for the government to provide housings affordable for the majority of the newly weds.
