Abstract
This study explored the sleep of mothers with babies in Korea. In particular, we looked at how the pattern and meaning of women’s sleep changes with the birth of baby, and how it is related with the social context such as gendered division of labour. Interviewing thirteen mothers who gave birth within a year, we found that lack of sleep and scattered sleep became a normal pattern for these mothers due to the constant care responsibility during the night, which led to negative health outcomes such as tiredness, exhaustion and even depression. The study also revealed that not only the biological needs such as breastfeeding, but also the gendered division of labour and the long-working hour in Korea are main factors that explain why mostly Korean mother’s, rather than father’s sleep are affected after the birth of baby.
