Abstract
As the problem of substantial U. S. current account deficits continues, critics against exchange rate policies of the China and East Asian countries have been heard increasingly. This paper examines the sustainability of current international external imbalances and draws policy implications for East Asian countries' exchange rate policies. We carry out econometrical analysis to determine to what degree current accounts are unbalanced in international framework. According to results, international imbalances are substantial as much as those in the middle of 1980s when exchange rates were adjusted drastically. Also we examine the evolution of total saving and investment of the China and East Asian countries under current account surplus situation. We find out the China experiences vigorous investment while other East Asian developing countries suffer from lack of investment. Consequently, exports contraction entailed by eventual exchange rate adjustment would do serious negative shock to East Asian countries except for the China. In order to alleviate eventual exchange rate adjustment's shock, East Asian countries need to cooperate to do simultaneous and mild adjustment of exchange rates.
