학부 중심의 경제학 교육은 다양한 관점에서 균형 있게 현실을 바라보는시각을 제공해야 한다. 국제 경제학 교육이 이에 부합하는지 교과서를 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 추상적 이론에의 편중은 이론을 경직적으로받아들이고, 사회. 경제적 이슈에 둔감하게 만든다. 둘째, 다른 학문과의 장벽으로 인해 폐쇄적 관점을 갖거나, 균형 있는 판단력을 갖기 어렵다. 셋째,국내에서의 경제활동과 달리 국경을 넘는 거래의 복잡성이 감추어져 있다. 넷째, ‘기업=국가’로 묘사함으로서 시장을 둘러싸고 있는 사회와 국가의 맥락을 간과하게 된다. 다섯째, 효율성에 초점을 맞춤으로서 자유무역이 자동적으로 좋은 결과를 초래하는 것처럼 착각하게 만든다. 그로 인해 시장 중심적 관점만을 기계적으로 배움으로서 사회적 관계와 공적영역에 대해 생각할여지가 없어지고, 효율성이외 다른 가치에 대해 생각해 볼 기회가 없어진다.
Abstract
While there were some papers to evaluate middle and high school economics,it is very hard to find any attempts to critically assess the college level economicseducation. By investigating the four kinds of best-selling and influentialinternational economics text books we try to access whether these books have thefeatures to meet the goals of college education. We argue that undergraduateeducation in general and economics major in particular should not only empowerstudents with a self-sustaining capacity to think and learn, but also instill instudents a sense of ethics, values, and civic engagement.
