Abstract

This study investigated the effect of musical training on emotional prosody recognition by administering an auditory emotion recognition task to both musician and non-musician groups. To examine individual differences that might influence emotion recognition ability, a personality questionnaire was also conducted, including three of the Big Five traits: openness, conscientiousness, and neuroticism. The analysis revealed no significant differences in overall emotion recognition accuracy—or in the recognition accuracy of specific emotions (joy, sadness, fear, disgust, anger, surprise, and neutral)—between the musician and non-musician groups. These results challenge the common assumption that musical training enhances verbal emotion recognition abilities, suggesting that musicians’ ability to perceive emotions in music does not necessarily transfer to recognizing emotions in speech. Furthermore, the findings raise the possibility that musicians and non-musicians may rely on different strategies when processing emotional information in prosody, underscoring the need for future research into the neurological and psychological mechanisms underlying these differences.
