Abstract
This study proposes a lifestyle balance model and confirms its usefulness as a new theoretical framework for identifying the concept and basis of lifestyle balance in the treatment of substance use disorders(SUD). The study first examines the background of the lifestyle balance concept raised during the paradigm shift to recovery in addiction treatment, and the role of lifestyle that affects the perpetuation of dependence and may also be associated with recovery from SUD. Second, it introduces several historical events in the field of mental health and addiction treatment that consider the importance of lifestyle balance by reflecting on its concept as a thematic foundation for a lifestyle balance model. Third, the study presents two theoretical models that construct the lifestyle balance model; i.e., it discusses the benefits of using a visually structured biopsychosocial domain model to understand addiction, and it describes a cognitive behavioral model that serves as a blueprint to successfully lead client case management. Fourth, it introduces the England's Breaking Free Health and Justice program, a SUD recovery treatment program developed based on the lifestyle balance model, and discusses its effectiveness. Finally, the theoretical, practical, and policy implications for its application in Korea are discussed based on the analysis of the lifestyle balance model.
