Abstract

The purpose of this study is to look over concerning the causing of regionalism in the election-related reports of the Korean press. How is a regionalism appearing in the election reports of Korea newspapers? What is the character of the form of regionalism property reports by the regional newspapers and the regionalism aspect from a viewpoint of quantitative analysis? The findings of this study can be summarized as follows: It's found that all the 4 newspapers surveyed were high in a subjective description rate in the newspapers' reports related with regionalism, the opposition party politicians appeared as a central performer of a deed and played a role as a cause-offer of regionalism. And from a viewpoint of a confrontation between the regions, Cheonbuk Ilbo kept antagonistic relationships with various regions, but Busan Ilbo did not devote antagonistic relationships articles to its paper. In addition, they showed a friendly feeling for the region-based party and the representative of the party while appearing the party-related images having a close relation to regionalism, which shows that one-sided, toward regionalism, report is as it used be. The regional newspapers have carried biased, toward the region-based party, articles from various angles(aspects) which could cause regionalism. Especially, concerning the president Rho impeachment case which had much influence on the general election 2004, the Maeil newspaper in the Yeungnam region circle induced the public opinion as 'a matter brought on himself', while Cheonbuk Ilbo in the Honam region circle defined as 'a new type of coup detat by the opposition political party', showing a clear difference from a viewpoint. It had a great influence on the regional subscribers of the consumers by playing a role as a central topic and public opinion in the region, having a close interrelation with the result of the general election.
