미군정기 지역언론 특성에 관한 연구: 광주지역 신문을 중심으로

Abstract

The main purpose of this paper is to investigate characteristics of three major newspapers in Gwangju area in the period of United States Army Military Government in Korea (USAMGIK). By analysing original and secondary documen- taries, we conducted comparative research focusing on the distinctive characteristics of local newspapers comparing to nationwide newspapers in USAMGIK period which the Korean contemporary press begins. The political orientation of those three newspapers, until October 1945, had been dominated by the progressives and the left wing inclination but since then under the governance of local USAMGIK, until August 1946, this inclination had changed to pro-American and the middle-of-the-road factional. Since August 1946, the direct governance of national USAMGIK had brought another transformation of political inclination to local newspapers: conformation of preserved and right-wing press. Those series of changes were resulted from political inclination of publishers but more significantly effected by different principles on press between national and local USAMGIK. This analysis supports that the importance of distinctive researches on the history of local press. Because this approach helps researchers to illuminate unique dynamics between local press and local politics and social relations.
