Abstract

The main objective of this study was to look into the TV news imaging formats used by local broadcasting systems in the Cheju region. To this end, this study analyzed the evening news aired by three land-based broadcasting services on Cheju Island for seven months from October 1st of 2007 to April 30th of 2008. The study focused on the imaging formats and the correlation between imaging and the news content of Cheju KBS, Cheju MBC, and JIBS. The results of the analysis show that 47.1% of the imaging appearing on TV news produced on Cheju Island consisted of prerecorded corresponding ‘accident imaging’, with no single ‘on-site live imaging’ scene, while 52.9% consisted of artificial imaging appropriate for the news content created by news producers. In particular, it shows a 32.5% heavy dependence on ‘supplementary imaging’. Given the fact that imaging coupled with timeliness, appropriateness, and sense of realism is the core of TV news, the lack of such attributes in the local broadcasting systems merits serious consideration. The broadcasting systems in this study show significant differences in their use of imaging formats. Cheju KBS topped the list in using prerecorded accident scenes, while Cheju MBC used them the least. In terms of using supplementary imaging, JIBS topped the list while Cheju KBS used it the least. Secondly, the results show that the imaging formats differ based on the news content. For example, the areas of politics/ public administration, economy, and human interest had high usage of ‘supplementary imaging’. As for crimes/accidents, there was a dominance of ‘symbolic shots’ that filmed policemen, court buildings, and flags in close-ups. Meanwhile, 82.4% of culture/sports news used on-site recorded ‘accident imaging’. As such, there appeared to be statistically significant differences in imaging formats according to subject. In the case of TV news on Cheju Island, once the topic of news content was determined, the appropriate imaging format was determined accordingly, which clearly demonstrates the use of standardized imaging. Thirdly, in examining the correlation between news content and imaging, the results show that there is 51.7% direct correlation, 28.3% indirect correlation, and 20.1% irrelevant correlation. The fact that the use of imaging corresponding to news content or providing supplementary information on news content barely represents half of all news aired on Cheju Island clearly demonstrates that imaging has not been used as an effective tool for news delivery. There is clearly a need to change the role that news imaging plays in providing news information, as well as to study the appropriate investment required in this effort.
