Abstract
Along with the increased programming of reality-based television shows as well as recent research trend studying entertainment-oriented media use for the political implications, this study focused on the political and social influences drawn from new types of viewership behaviors such as ‘expanded and connected’ access to multiple media in the multiple channel and media convergence environment. This study especially examined various viewership behaviors watching competition-based survival audition type of reality shows and subsequent utilization mirrored in audience activity in terms of civic culture for political efficacy and social trust. Results show that the amount of watching survival reality programs has significant interaction effect with social media behaviors suggesting that the effect is greater for heavy-viewers compared to non-viewers and light-viewers. Specifically, for heavy viewing of survival reality shows the positive effect of social media use tends to be inhibited. While these results showed a little different patterns across social media engagement types (discursive vs. behavioral), similar tendency was found in their effect on social trust.
