Abstract

This study adopted the push-pull-mooring model, which explains human mobility, to investigate the factors affecting journalists’ intentions to change jobs. Analyzing data from 6,456 cases collected through the "Journalist Survey" from 2007 to 2019, the results indicate that the autonomy constraints within the journalistic organizational culture and the demoralization experienced within the organizational climate have a more significant impact on the intention to change jobs than financial compensation. The decline in professional self-efficacy experienced due to misreporting was also an important factor. While factors like career length did not directly influence the intention to change jobs, they moderated the impact of morale on this intention. Junior reporters were more affected by organizational demoralization, but this effect diminished as their experience increased. However, the impact varied depending on the type of media organization. Thus, although commonly referred to collectively as "the news media," newspapers, broadcast companies, and digital-only news differ in organizational culture and operational methods, affecting the factors that influence journalists’ job change intentions. This study suggests that future research should explore various internal organizational factors in media companies to prevent and mitigate journalists’ turnover, moving beyond the focus on satisfaction in previous research.
