Abstract

Kim, Jong-sam is evaluated as a poet who constructed a unique modernistic world of poetry after the Korean war. His poems strongly reveal aesthetic properties based on music. The poet pursued a consonance of the domains of both poetry and music, craving for the absolute purity of music. The reason he indulged in music is that music not only establishes one's internal and mental order, but it also serves as a realm that lets one experience the sincerity of existence. He sought to induce a poetic sentiment through the method of counterpoint that contrasted reality with fantasy. Especially, he experimented a possible combination of music and poetry by effectively utilizing the mode of a fugue characterized by imitation and repetition. Extreme ellipsis and condensation provided a source that made his poems a space full of imagination and fantasy. Death that frequently appears in his works was the kind of death as a yearning for a perfect beauty by which existence is consummated. To the poet, music and poetry as well as beauty and death are not separated entities, but denotations that convey the identical implications.
