Abstract
This paper analyzes Margaret Atwood’s critique of the distorted interpretation of the Bible and the totalitarian pseudo-theocracy of Gilead in The Handmaid’s Tale and The Testaments, which underpin the abhorrent sexual practices and unnatural reproduction in the dystopia. Atwood is recognized as a feminist, but her work addresses broader concerns, portraying dystopia as harmful to both women and men, across all ages and classes. Through the exploitation of women for state-controlled reproduction, Atwood reveals the dangers of misusing the Bible, which result in a hopeless, loveless, and faithless society. However, Atwood herself complicates her message through her subjective interpretations of biblical themes, unintentionally reinforcing the very misreadings she critiques.
