Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the skill-based differences in predicting the setter's set direction in different offensive situations. Eight expert players and eight non-expert playes (recreational players) participated in this experiment. The task was to anticipate the opponent setter's set direction as quickly and accurately as possible in the three situations (practice-basic situation, game-simple situation, and game-complex condition), which were organized differently according to the amount of information processing. The result on choice reaction time revealed that non-experts responded more quickly than experts. However, experts showed less reaction time and less movement time in predicting the set direction than non-experts, in both the game-simple and game-complex situation. For experts, no differences in reaction time and movement time were found across the three situations, but non-experts responded slowly in the game-simple and game-complex situation than in the practice-basic situation. The result showed that experts anticipated the set direction more accurately than non-experts, who had a more difficulty in predicting depth than side of set direction. Findings suggest that anticipatory ability has no relationship with choice reaction time, and that non-experts need more time to acquire and process visual information properly in situation which includes a lot of information.
