Abstract
Metabolic syndrome risk factors are increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease as well as increased mortality from cardiovascular disease and all causes. Exercise has a favorable effect on most of the positive risk factors for most of disease. The purpose of the study was to effects of long-term exercise training on metabolic syndrome risk factors in elderly women. The sample included 27 elderly women with metabolic syndrome risk factors. The metabolic syndrome risk factors were based on the guidelines of the National Cholesterol Education Program, including elevated waist circumference (WC), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), triglycerides (TG), blood glucose (BG) and low HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C). The diagnosis of the metabolic syndrome risk factors was made when two or more of the risk determinants. Exercise training was offered = 30 min/day, = 3 times/week for 6 months. The metabolic syndrome risk factors improve with exercise training a paired t-test was conducted. After 6 months of exercise training, WC decreased significantly from 87.72+/-11.72 to 84.99+/-10.83 cm (p<.01), SBP decreased significantly from 141.7+/-8.1 to 135.6+/-15 mmHg (P<.01), and DBP decreased significantly from 73.3+/-7.0 to 70.4+/-7.3 mmHg (p<.01). These results suggest that exercise training in elderly women with the metabolic risk factors can be useful as a treatment strategy and this study supports the concept that exercise training may play a important role in the progression of chronic disease
