Abstract
The purpose of this study was to assess the agreement between maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) measured directly when performing the maximal graded exercise test (GXT) and estimated VO2max from four different equations (i.e., Barnett, equations a and b; Leger; Matsuzaka) in the middle school girls. The 20m progressive shuttle run test (20m PSRT) was performed by 30 girls (average age 13.99±0.30 years, body weight 52.92±7.87kg, hight 158.04±5.19cm, BMI 21.2±2.43). The participants wore a portable heart rate equipment (Polar CS300) to measure heart rate (HR) during the 20m PSRT. The coefficient of correlations (r) between the equations (Leger, Barnett (1), Barnett (2), and Matsuzaka) of 20m PSRT and VO2max were .597 (p=.000), .723 (p=.000), .518 (p=.003), and .740 (p=.000), respectively. The mean difference ranged from .528ml/kg/min (Matsuzaka) to 5.085ml/kg/min (Barnett (2)). Two equations (Barnett (1), (2)) significantly overestimated directly measured VO2max, except Leger and Matsuzaka equations. The standard error of the estimate (SEE) ranged from 4.08ml/kg/min (Matsuzaka) to 5.19ml/kg/min (Barnett (2)), and the percentage error (%Erorr) ranged from 17.27% (Matsuzaka) to 54.19% (Barnett (2)). The results of this study suggest that Matsuzaka equation provides the closest agreement with directly measured VO2max (cardiorespiratory fitness) in Korean middle school girls. However, in point of the correlations coefficient (r=.448~.518) between directly measured VO2max and the 20m PSRT variables (ie., last speed, duration, number of laps), the accuracy of the equations available to estimate VO2max from the 20m PSRT is questionable at the individual level. Therefore, it is suggest that the development of new equations of 20m PSRT might be urgently needed for Korean middle school girls.
