Abstract
We attempted to measure estimated medals in the Beijing Olympic Games through the study on the determinants of Athens Olympic Games. Dependent variables are the points of the Olympic medals depending on medal colors, independent variables are Cobb-Douglas production function form reflected the weight of population & GDP, host countries, religion, climate as variables used in previous studies, efficiency, leader countries in world society as new variables. Observations are 72 countries winning medals except North Korea, Taiwan and Cuba because of incomplete data. The result showed expected values were very closed to actual medals, is over 95%. This was due to the reasonable design of model. We revised some independent variables, substituted the latest populations & GDP into model equation, deduced estimated medals in the Beijing Olympic Games. The rankings of main countries were USA 1, China 2, Russia 3 and Australia 4. Comparing with Athene Olympic Games the countries expected higher rank were Japan, Great Britain, Greece, Spain, Canada, etc. The countries expected lower rank were Germany, France, Ukraine, Netherlands, Rumania, etc. The estimated ranking of Korea was 10.
