Abstract

This paper deals with so-called periphrastic indefinite expressions, specifically ‘interrogative pronoun + (i-) + -nga’ constructions. Firstly, I propose that this kind of constructions be considered not lexical but syntactic. Secondly, they are CPs rather than NPs, which many believed it to be. Thirdly they are not subject-less clauses; they have their own subjects like normal copula clauses. I show that it is possible to explain their syntactic properties with the empty category 'pro' instead of using excessive deletion. Fourthly, periphrastic indefinite expressions reveal that they belong to apposition constructions. I show the architecture of those constructions and suggest that they should be adjoined to IP/VP or PP depending on whether they are related to arguments or not.
