Abstract
For the analysis of expletive constructions, Chomsky (2000) proposed a long-distance agreement which stipulates a direct "T-associate relation" that is independent of the expletive there. Essentially following Chomsky's (2000) Agree which involves features only, I propose "a unified T-Agree" with the split tense: Ts and To. Ts is a main (subject) tense and To is a secondary (object) tense. Chomsky's (2000) Agree assumes a merge of there with T together with "T-associate relation". The proposed binary Ts/To tense system can unify both T-associate relation and the merge of there into one process of feature agreement, i.e. T-Agree: Ts (a probe) agrees with there (a goal) and To (a probe) agrees with a postverbal subject (a goal). The "unified T-Agree" can provide a more natural explanation for the expletive constructions, and solve the remaining problems in the previous studies including Chomsky's Agree.
