초록

In order to evaluate the impact of submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) on the coastal eco￾system, we measured temperature, salinity, nutrients, chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and suspended solids in coastal seawater near Wollyeong Stream (western part of Jeju) and Cheonmi Stream (eastern part of Jeju) during the summer of 2017. The average concentrations of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), dissolved inorganic phosphate (DIP), and dissolved inorganic silicate (DSi) in the coastal waters at the Cheonmi Stream inlet were 140%, 42%, and 420% higher than those at the Wollyeong Stream inlet, respectively. The relatively lower temperature and salinity and the higher nutrient concentrations at the Cheonmi Stream inlet are associated with SGD. However, the average concentration of Chl-a at the Cheonmi Stream inlet was approximately 33% lower than that at the Wollyeong Stream inlet, indicating that the lower temperature conditions seem to be inhibited the growth of phytoplankton. In addition, the average concentration of Chl-a in coastal water at stream inlets was relatively lower than that in the adjacent coastal water. Therefore, even in the absence of rainfall, SGD serves as a major source of nutrients to the coastal ecosystem, playing a crucial role in nutrient supply and significantly contributes to biological productivity nutrient-enriched coastal waters near ephemeral streams.
