초록

Person-suffix ‘-kkun(꾼)’ in Korean is highly productive among uniquely Korean suffixes. In this study I shall illuminate the aspects of how this suffix ‘-kkun’ is explained in Japanese dictionaries. First of all, all the suffixes with ‘-kkun’ are selected out of Korean Reverse Dictionary, then the meanings of ‘-kkun’ are investigated in Standard Korean Dictionary. The suffixes, except for those having no entry in Standard Korean Dictionary and those to function as polysemy but have no one-on-one meaning correspondence in Japanese, are chosen for this study which are all 148 items in total. The corresponding Japanese items, which are a total of 286 equivalents or explanations, are found in two Japanese dictionaries. They are redivided into a total of 12 types including ‘1. explanatory type’, ‘2. uniquely Japanese type with or without Chinese origin’. Out of the various types, the ‘1. explanatory type’ has the most as having 110 entries with 38.3%. It wouldn’t mean though that there are not enough of direct Japanese matches or correspondence, but mean that the dictionaries playing its crucial role of explaining try to explain more in detail so as to show as additional descriptions how such suffixes are being used, in addition to pointing out the Japanese suffixes matching with those of Korean. Next, the ‘2. uniquely Japanese type with or without Chinese origin’ has 80 entries with 27.9%, which are less 'frequent though than those types of Chinese letter suffixes ・ dependent nouns, including' the types of ‘3. ‘-者’ type’ through ‘11. ‘-員’ type’, which amount to a total of 90 entries with 31.4%. This tells that, although a noun-lexeme in Japanese to indicate a person is possible without using suffix, noun-lexemes with Chinese suffixes are more abundant and highly productive in use compared to those without.
