헤세의 교양소설에 나타난 교양인의 길－『페터 카멘친트』, 『데미안』, 『유리알 유희』를 중심으로－

그 어느 때보다 교양과 교양교육이 중요하지만 그 방향이나 목적을 설정하기가 용이치 않는 오늘날, 원점으로 돌아가 교양과 교양인이 뭔지 성찰해 보는 것이 도움이 될 수 있다. 이 작업을 이론적인 담론이 아니라 문학작품을 통해 수행하므로 좀 더 생동감 있는 메시지를 전하고자 했다. 즉, 본고는 헤세의 교양소설을 다시 읽으며 교양 문제를 다차원적으로 논구한 것이다. 페터 카멘친트, 데미안, 유리알 유희는 헤세의 전기, 중기, 후기의 교양소설을 대표하는 것으로 청년들의 성장기, 즉 교양과정을 그리고 있다. 다만, 세 작품의 주인공들이씨름하는 문제와 관심사는 서로 다르다. 페터 카멘친트는 어릴 때부터 자연에 경도된 주인공이 자연을 통해 심미적이고 윤리적인 예술가로 성장하는 모습을 보여주고, 데미안은 주인공이 기독교 전통의 사상과 치열하게 씨름하며 주체적이고 개성 있는 지성인으로 발전하는과정을 보여준다. 유리알 유희는 크네히트라는 전설적인 교육자의 일생을 그리고 있는데, 그는 최고의 지식과 명예를 갖고 있지만 단 한 명의 아이를 교육하기 위해 목숨까지 바치는 살신성인의 교육을 실천한다. 이렇듯 세 교양소설이 추구하는 자연 심미적 가치, 종교 사상적 가치, 윤리 실천적 가치는 오늘날 주체적 사고와 인성이 요청되는 교양교육의 담론에도 시사하는 바가 적지 않으리라생각한다.
Abstract
Although liberal education is more important than ever, it is not easy to establish its direction or purpose. It can be helpful to go back to square one and reflect on what culture(Bildung) and a cultured man are. I would like to carry out this work through literature rather than logical theoretical discourse to convey a more lively message. This study aims to reread the works of Hesse, the master of the ‘Bildungsroman’, and discuss the issues of the ‘Bildung’(culture). “Peter Camenzind,” “Demian,” and “the Glass Beade Game” represent the ‘Bildungsroman’ of the early, mid- and late Hesse and depict the intense period of youth growth. However, the problems and interests of the three main characters are different. “Peter Kamenzint” shows the protagonist, who has been revered by nature since childhood, growing into an aesthetic and ethical artist through nature. And “Demian” shows how the main character develops into a self-reliant and individual intellectual, fiercely wrestling with the ideas of Christian tradition. “The Glass Bead Game" depicts the life of a legendary educator named Knecht, who has the best knowledge and honor. He practices the education of sacrifice, which means giving his life to educate a single child. As such, I think the natural aesthetic value, religious and ideological values, and ethical practical values pursued by the three ‘Bildungsromans’ have many implications for the discourse of today’s liberal education.
