Abstract
This study examined how medical professionals conceptualize everyday diseases and how they explain them to patients. To this end, 18 medical experts were interviewed, and metaphor usage patterns were analyzed using actual spoken language data. Examples of metaphorical uses related to bodily functions and characteristics include “body - machine,” “abdomen - funnel,” “thyroid - stove,” and “kidney - water purifier.” Regarding characteristics and symptoms of diseases, metaphors included “shape of cancer – mushroom shape,” “vocal cord nodules - calluses,” “subcutaneous cysts - glaciers in water,” “lungs - grape clusters,” “tear ducts – sewage,” and “blood vessels – pipes.” The metaphor concerning the diagnosis process and method was “observing signs of oriental medicine – predicting rain through dark clouds.” Lastly, regarding treatment and prescription, metaphors such as “skin pulling – pulling gum,” “hearing aid – glasses,” “dentures – new shoes,” and “flu vaccine – umbrella” were used. Results showed that various metaphors are widely used in actual medical discourse. The use of appropriate metaphors by medical professionals enables patients to understand their bodies and better understand the treatment process.
