본고는 고전문학 연구자가 현재의 ChatGPT를 사용자 입장에서 어떻게 활용할 수 있는지를 고찰하기 위해 작성되었다. 인공지능이라는 첨단 기술이 거대한 파도처럼 밀려오는 이 시대에, 과거의 고전을 연구하는 연구자가 마주할 수밖에 없는 현실적 상황과 그 대응을 위한 노력의 일환으로서 실질적인 활용 방안을 모색하고자 한 것이다. 특히 고전문학 가운데 가장 대중적으로 널리 알려진 한문소설인 『금오신화』, 그중에서도 ｢만복사저포기｣를 중심으로 삼아, 연구와 교육이라는 두 축을 따라 그 활용 가능성을 살펴보았다. 우선 연구 분야에서는 간단한 정보 검색과 논문 요약을 비롯하여 메타적 연구사 정리, 디지털 역사인문지도를 위한 활용 가능성까지 검토하였다. 특별한 코딩이나 디지털 기술 없이, 프롬프트를 통한 ChatGPT의 활용만으로도 상당 부분 구현 가능함을 확인할 수 있었다. 『금오신화』에 대한 20여 년간 127편 논문의 연구 경향을 메타데이터를 통해 살펴보았으며, 텍스트에서 장소·서적·인물을 추출하는데 매우 뛰어난 성능을 가지고 있음을 확인하였다. 앞으로 기술 발전에 힘입어, 연구는 더욱 다양한 방식과 방면에서 실질적인 도움을 받을 수 있을 것이다. 다음으로는 교육 분야에서는 번역과 글쓰기, 이미지 및 동영상 자료의 활용 방안을 중심으로 논의하였다. 대형언어모델(LLM)에 기반한 ChatGPT는 한문 번역에서 아직 많은 한계를 드러내고 있지만, 그 발전 속도는 주목할 만했다. 글쓰기 교육에서는 표절 문제를 극복하고 창의적인 작문을 유도하기 위해, 교수자의 지도 아래 학생이 직접 글쓰기를 수행하는 방식이 필요함을 강조하였다. 또한 ChatGPT를 활용해 손쉽게 구현 가능한 이미지와 동영상을 통해, 문화콘텐츠 개발이 한층 더 진전될 수 있는 가능성도 언급하였다. 우리가 현재 직면하고 있듯, ChatGPT의 놀라운 발전 속도는 인류의 미래에 축복이자 재앙이 될 수 있다. 고전을 연구하는 연구자에게 있어서도 예외가 될 수 없다. 물론 고전을 연구하는 사람이 ChatGPT 기술의 발전에 직접 관여하기란 매우 어렵겠지만, 이제까지 지켜온 성실한 연구 태도를 보다 충실하게 견지하는 동시에 열린 자세로 디지털 융복합 시대가 몰고 오는 급속한 변화에도 능동적으로 대처하려는 적극적 태도가 필요하다. 지금이야말로 앞으로의 기술 발전을 비판적으로 성찰하고 올바른 방향으로의 발전을 이루어내기 위해 인문학자로서의 근원적 질문이 더욱 필요한 시기이다. 본고는 고전문학을 연구하는 한 사람으로서 그런 문제적 상황에 능동적으로 대처하기 위해 비판적 고민을 담아 활용해본 하나의 보고서이기도 하다.
Abstract
This paper explores how classical literature researchers can utilize the current version of ChatGPT. In an era where new artificial intelligence technology is surging like a massive wave, this study is written within the realistic limitations and concerns that researchers of old classics inevitably face. Among classical literary works, the focus is on 『Geumo Sinhwa(金鰲新話)』, particularly the story ｢Manboksa Jeopogi(萬福寺樗蒲記)｣, while examining potential applications in both research and education. In the field of research, this study examines possibilities ranging from simple searches and summarizing academic papers to organizing meta-level research histories and utilizing AI for digital historical humanities mapping. It has been confirmed that many aspects of these applications can be realized solely through prompt engineering without requiring special coding or digital expertise. In the field of education, the study explores the use of ChatGPT in translation, writing, and multimedia applications such as images and videos. While ChatGPT, based on large language models (LLMs), still has many issues with classical Chinese translation, its rapid advancement is evident. Regarding writing education, the study emphasizes that students should first write independently under the guidance of instructors to address the issue of plagiarism. Lastly, it discusses the potential for further cultural content development through ChatGPT-generated images and videos, which can be easily implemented. The astonishing speed of ChatGPT’s development can be both a blessing and a disaster for humanity. While researchers of classical literature may not directly influence technological advancements, it is crucial to maintain a sincere research attitude and an open mind toward embracing new technologies. This is because the current era requires fundamental humanities-driven inquiries to critically reflect on technological progress and guide it in the right direction.
