초록

No one denies that language is the prominent means for communications in the human society. It usually needs the two essential things for communication. One is what is called an external form, which can usually be a word or a phrase or a sentence. The other is what is called a meaning. It means the things the forms convey. Meanwhile, Masnavi which was composed and compiled in the 13th century by one of the greatest Persian mystic poets, Moulānā, is regarded as such a great literary work that it is even called the Koran in Persian. While we read the Masnavi consisting of six volumes with over 25,600 couplets, and are acquainted with what Moulānā said, we can find lots of similes, metaphors or allegories that Moulānā used. And we find out that many of them are related with the human language. Especially a lot of these similes and metaphors in Masnavi were used to show the relations between the language form and its meaning. He also explains that the external forms of language such as words and sentences can be the obstacles for understanding the real meaning. Therefore what we should do is that we should give priority to the meaning, not to the form. Besides, Moulānā believes that the origin of human language is from God according to the Koran. He expresses this point repeatedly in various allegories in Masnavi. In addition, lots of similes and metaphors are used in Masnavi to show what Moulānā thinks about the human behavior regarding the language. In this paper I try to analyze the ideas and thoughts of Moulānā on the language through these similes and metaphors.

In this paper I try to analyze the ideas and thoughts of Moulānā on the language through these similes and metaphors.
