초록
This study is about a small Buddhist painting acquired by Stein, a member of the British Central Asia Expedition, from the Toyuk Grottoes in Turfan between 1906 and 1908. An attempt was made to interpret the icon in relation to the scriptures, and if it was a completed work, the size of the completed work, production period, etc. were estimated. I think the first reason for the lack of in-depth research on this work to date is that very little information can be obtained from the remaining research subjects. The MAS.1125 Buddhist painting in the possession of the British Museum is from the story of Maitreya, who was born in the city of Sidhu, as told in the Xia Sheng Jing(下生經) and Sutra of Becoming a Buddha(成佛經), in which Maitreya becomes a Buddha and saves all living beings on this earth through three sermons, After listening to the first sermon, it was assumed that it would be about converting to Buddhism through a ritual. Although it was viewed as an unfinished work rather than a sketch or an artist's practice, the possibility that it was part of a completed work was not ruled out. Regarding the production period, Stein believed that it was produced around the 10th century, while in this study, the view is weaker than Stein's view through the description of the costumes and figures in the painting and comparison with the <Sketch of Maitreya’s Transformation Sutra> excavated from Janggyeong-dong, Dunhuang. It was estimated to have been made about a hundred years earlier, during the Western Zhou period or the early Tianshan Uyghur Kingdom.
