Abstract
The Form and Meaning of Heroines in Romance Novels of the Early Cho-Sun Dynasty. Lee, Jeong-won This thesis intends to study the form and meaning of heroines in romance novels of the early Cho-Sun dynasty. The love between a hero and a heroine is the manifestation of the hero's desire and the heroine's noble status suited for hero's desire. And the form of the heroine has dual aspects of 'supporter' and 'fetter' of the hero. On the other hand, the form of the heroin acts in concert with generic divergence in romance novels of the early Cho-Sun dynasty. During the process of stylistic changes, the heroine transformed herself from a ghost, a wizard into a human being. This transformation has become a basis for the changes in the story. The transformation from a ghost into a human being changes the confined fictional world into a space concentrated with all social relationships. And the transformation makes coexistences of various characters and new narrative compositions from the hero's desire possible.
