Abstract

This Study has aimed to illuminate Jung-Joo Sae’s poetical intent and its aesthetical effects by searching for basic principles in The Myths of Jil-Ma-Jae that has provoked readers to laughter. As a result, he made effects of laughter based on largely three principles: ① the controling pity and piety, ② the double demoting, ③ the discording expectations. First principle that he intented to provoke to laughter was a strategy of the controling pity and piety about characters in his poetry. For laughter could not be provoked if defects or faults of characters would provoke readers to pity and piety. To compose comically stories of Jil-Ma-Jae people, Soe demoted both speakers and objects of each story. This demoting method of him has been usually the putting up ridiculous events or characters by which have gone back on intently nobilities. The ‘discording expectations’ has provoked to laughter by showing ugliness, contrasting discordances, lacking unity, and making inadequacies. Large two dimensions of this method in Soe’s poetry were two deviations from moral ideology and from rationality. This method of making comicality was of not deriding or devaluating but positively defending lowly people. Thus this provoked laughter in his poetry could be the laughter relaxing tension of life. Consequently, he was to sublimate the weight of life into the light of it by laughter to sway the common ideas and rules, morality and rationality.
