近代的 民族國家와 4？3소설－濟州 言語, 神話, 歷史의 특수성을 중심으로－

Abstract

Benedict Anderson claims in his book, Imagined Communities that a nation-state is no more than a imagined community concomitant with the emergence of the modern age. According to his claim, there have been dynamic activities of Korean scholars to abolish nation-state. However, the modernizing paths of the west and those of East Asia, especially, Korea are very different. Therefore, it would not be relevant to apply directly those theories derived from the situations of the west to the Korean situations.This article is analysing novels about 43 Resistances based on Jeju's language, myths, and history. It manifests the modernizing process of Korea much different with that of the west, and examines Jeju's yearning for independence derived from such a distinct history. The yearning, symbolized by "the construction of Tamra republic", is not due to the violence of the nation-state but closely related to the impacts of Japan's imperialism which has resulted in the breakdown of the feudalistic orders and violent conflicts between the left-wings and the right-wings after the liberation from the Japan's dominance.
