A Corpus Based Study of Multiple Meaning Changes: The Case of Korean Verb ‘jida’

이 연구는 코퍼스 통계분석을 이용하여 文脈을 통해 나타나는 語彙의 意味를 파악하고 의미의 變化 樣相을 記述하는 것을 目的으로 한다. 이를 위해 1910~30년대 活字本 古小說 資料와 1990년대 소설 자료 속에서 動詞 ‘지다’가 사용된 문맥을 抽出하고 함께 사용된 名詞句들의 의미 유형을 분석하여 두 時期 ‘지다’의 사용 의미가 어떻게 변화하였는지 살펴보았다. 그 결과 自動詞 ‘지다’의 의미에 있어서 消滅의 의미 사용이 -40% 줄어들고 生成의 의미 사용이 늘어났으며, 競爭과 比較의 의미에서는 비교의 의미가 -15% 줄어들고 경쟁의 의미가 늘어난 것을 알 수 있었다. 경쟁의 의미를 갖는 명사구 유형은 對象이 -20% 줄어들고 狀況이 +33% 늘어났다. 他動詞 ‘지다’의 의미는 具體的인 사용이 -49% 줄고 抽象的인 사용이 늘었다. 특히 事物에 대한 사용이 -49% 줄어든 반면, 狀態에 대한 사용이 +51%나 크게 늘어났다.
Abstract
This study is to use the corpus statistical analysis to find out contextual lexical meanings and to describe aspects of meaning changes. For the purpose of this study, in Printing Type Classic Novels published in 1910s~30s and those in 1990s novel, contexts where the korean verb ‘jida’ is used are extracted and meaning types of noun phrases also used in those contexts are analyzed so as to see how the meanings of the verb ‘jida’ have changed over the period mentioned. The findings from the analysis in this study show that the intransitive verb ‘jida’ has been used less in terms of the meaning of ‘disappearance’ by -40% while more as the meaning of ‘generation’, and it has been used less to mean ‘comparison’ by -15% while more to mean ‘competition’. Noun phrase types assuming a meaning of ‘competition’ are found to have been used less in relation to ‘objects’ by -20% while more with ‘situations’ by +33%. The meanings of the transitive verb ‘jida’ have been used less ‘specifically’ by -49%, while more ‘abstractively’. Particularly, the verb has been used less with ‘things’ by -49%, while more with ‘conditions’ by +51%. All in all, proportion of such noun phrase types has decreased.
