Abstract

The discourse on ‘symbolism’ during the late Japanese colonial period developed through both historical-philosophical awareness and rhetorical strategy. ‘The language of symbol’ possesses pure and explosive power in the unconscious, and is embodied as the highest value of body language by artists responding to the changing historical contexts. The ‘cow’ visualized by poets and painters in the late Japanese colonial period exists within the system of the symbolic language of the time. The figurative image of ‘cows’, embodied through collective figuration in both poetry and painting, represents cultural memory beyond simple ‘sentimental localism’. This paper focuses primarily on the images of ‘cows’ in the works of Yun Gon-gang, Oh Jang-hwan, and Kim Jong-han. The ‘cows’ of these poets appeared as twins to humans (people) and as its alter ego, symbolizing mortality and immortality, creation, and the power of life. The pain of not being able to live ‘here and now’ is transformed into the possibility of apocalyptic salvation through this delay in time. The figure of these twins symbolizes a potential power, an immortal power, that cannot be realized in the time and space of the ‘here and now’ but can be realized in the future. An era was coming to an end and another historical time was coming.
