Abstract
Research indicates that emotional factors toward mathematics affect learning disabled students' performance in mathematics. Using a sample of 22 elementary school students who have mathematical learning disabilities, divided equally at random in an experimental and a control group, this study explored the effect of a mathematical game on emotional characteristics of students with learning disabilities in the context of mathematics. Students in the experimental group participated in a mathematical game program for 15 weeks while those in the control group were placed in the conventional teaching setting. The Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was conducted to test differences between the two groups in multiple outcome measures reflecting students' level of anxiety, belief, attitude, motivation, and utilization in mathematics. This study found the following results: First, participation in mathematical games significantly affected the level of anxiety, attitude, and utilization. In particular, mathematical games were most effective in releasing mathematics related anxiety. Second, while a mathematical game boosted the positive factors of mathematics-related anxiety and belief among the experimental group students, it was found to be more effective in reducing the negative factors of attitude, motivation, and utilization in mathematics. These findings suggest that a mathematical game is an effective educational method to improve learning disabled students' emotional orientations toward mathematics
