Abstract
This study aimed investigated young children's perception of peers with physical disability, visual impairment, hearing impairment, and developmental delay. Research tool was developed based on Favazza and Odom(1995), Diamond and Hestenes(1997), Dyson(2005), and Kim(2007), which was consisted of 28 items under four sub-areas including contact with people with disabilities, interaction with peers with disabilities, ability of peers with disabilities, and contagion of disabilities. The subjects of the study were a total of 200 children, including 100 boys and 100 girls at age 4 and 5. The findings of the study were followed. First, the young children experienced people with physical disabilities compared to people with other disabilities. Second, the children had more positive perception about the peers with physical disability and hearing impairment rather than peers with developmental delay. Third, the girls showed more willingness to interact with peers with physical disability, visual impairment, or hearing impairment than the boys. The boys perceived more strongly that the physical disability, visual impairment, or hearing impairment would be contagious than the girls did.
