Abstract
Given that the importance of instructional adaptations for students with disabilities has been emphasized in the field of special education over the past decades, this study investigated specific methods and examples of instructional adaptations in mathematics by interviewing 14 general education teachers who provided instructional adaptations in mathematics for students with disabilities in their inclusive education classroom. The results were summarized as follows. First, the teachers provided the same instruction content as one for general education students but they adapted instructional levels and amounts of instruction based on the performance level of student with disabilities. Second, the teachers preferred small group instruction to peer instruction or one-to-one instruction. Third, the teachers often used a variety of manipulatives and representations and provided contextualized and game-type problems through modeling, problem-solving examples, feedback, and reinforcements. Lastly, the teachers adapted the assessment in terms of the its level, time, and number of problems. Based on the results of this study, fundamental information of how to provide instructional adaptations in mathematics might be collected, established, and shared with teachers who sought to find an effective way of teaching students with disabilities in their inclusive education classroom. The limitations of this study and implications for future study were discussed.
